When celebrity chef Paula Deen announced last week that she has been struggling for years with diabetes, her secret caused an uproar. Fans, fellow chefs, and nutritionists all split over the news that Deen’ famous for her deep-fried, butter-laden Southern comfort food has been hiding her diagnosis from the public eye. Adding more fuel to the fire? News that Deen will appear in a series of ads for diabetes drug-maker Novo Nordisk.

Already, her longtime publicist has quit over the firestorm. Other celeb chefs, most famously Anthony Bourdain, have slammed Deen for hiding her diagnosis while continuing to sell her fans on dishes heavy in fat and sugar. Bourdain took to Twitter again on Tuesday to slam Deen for using her diagnosis to turn a profit, while continuing to push her artery-clogging (and unhealthy) recipes.

But what, exactly, does Deen’s diagnosis mean? More than 25 million Americans suffer from diabetes, and the bulk suffer from Type 2 diabetes, just like Deen. You’re more likely to fall prey to the disease if you are obese, meaning Deen’s taste first, health second style of cooking is a major no-no for people trying to avoid the disease. Type 2 robs the body of its ability to regulate blood sugar, so meals must be carefully timed and planned out to avoid eating too much or too little sugar at the wrong time.

While Deen insists that she doesn’t actually eat her famous dishes as often as people think, there’s no escaping that fact that for a diabetic, eating is no longer a carefree exercise. It’s not simply about eating what you love in moderation, and even with a meal plan, some diabetics require medication to balance their blood sugar. And the list of consequences for non-management are long: heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, pregnancy complications, and more.

Deen is a powerhouse in the food world, with multiple cookbooks, TV shows, a magazine, a restaurant, and her own line of kitchenware. But it’s questionable whether her media empire will be able to stand the fallout from her revelation. For now, it seems, her diagnosis only confirms what nutritionists have begged people to do for years: step away from the deep frier and eat healthier, lighter foodsóbefore it’s too late.

Winter can wreak havoc on your face, which is a bummer, since it might be the only skin peeking out from all those cozy layers! To protect your face from the elements, follow these tips and get ready to put your best face forward through any cold snap.

There are a lot of factors assaulting your lips in the wintertime: cold, dryness, and wind all sap precious moisture and leave your pout chapped and cracked. Slather on a lip balm that contains natural moisturizers like beeswax, and avoid the tinted kinds: the dyes can dry your lips further, worsening the issue.

Believe it or not, when winter hits, you still need sunscreen. Even though the weather is cold and gray, the sun can still damage your skin, even if you don’t develop a noticeable burn. The damage is even worse if you’re hitting the slopes, since the snow acts as a giant reflector for the sun’s rays. Protect yourself without a second thought by applying a moisturizer with SPF every morning, and pack a bottle of sunscreen before you head out into the powdery stuff.

Cold temps and stinging winds can leave your eyes watering, so wear waterproof eye makeup. If the cold weather is also leaving your face feeling extra parched, swap the mattifying foundation and powder for a moisturizing formula, which will help soothe your skin without feeling greasy.

Guess what can harm your skin just as much as the cold weather outdoors? Yep, you can blame the dryness of indoor heating systems. They can wreak havoc on your skin, especially the delicate skin on your face. Use a humidifier in your home to relieve dryness, and use a rich night cream before heading to bed.

It’s not all bad: winter is the perfect time to try a new facial treatment, like a peel, that might ordinarily cause heightened sensitivity to the sun. That’s because we typically don’t spend as many hours soaking up the rays during January as we do in June. Just remember, the sun never completely disappears, so be diligent about continuing your daily SPF routine!

Every new season brings with it a plethora of OMG-inducing new styles. But when you’re stuck in an office or a classroom, where dress codes or common comfort may dictate the bulk of your wardrobe, working in new trends can be difficult. Here are a few ideas to try this fall plus four trends to skip altogether.

1. Sheer tops. Lace separates and sheer tops may rock the runways, but at the office? Not so much. Layer them over opaque pieces to stay office-appropriate. Go for a colored or patterened piece for punch, or stick to a blush-nude cami.

2. Bold color. Too much can look out of place, so stick to a punchy accessory like a bright clutch to enjoy a feel-good hue without losing your professional vibe.

3. Feather jewelry. Feathered earrings may give off too much of an earth-child aura, so stick to a cast metal feather bracelet or ring instead.

4. Ladylike menswear. Keep the “lady” part and avoid any overly slouchy pieces. Instead try a blazer over a dress, or tuck a silk tank into slim trousers.

5. Patterns. Plaid looks best on flats, handbags, or other ladylike accessories, to avoid a lumberjack vibe. And polka dots should be worn carefully; think a muted print on a blouse, or a day dress minus any girly ruffles.

6. Volume. Maxiskirts and chunky sweaters become more wearable if you choose a skirt with a little less volume and pick a sweater with a more body-conscious cut (think: no sleeves that double as mittens). Belt it for definition and add some chunky jewelry.

And, for your consideration, four trends that you probably just shouldn’t attempt at the office:

1. Leather dresses
2. Floor-length capes
3. Showgirl heels
4. Slit-up-to-there skirts

Most women would probably say that they feel prettier, younger, and sexier when they’re wearing a little makeup. But wearing the wrong kind of makeup can actually make you look worse, highlighting fine lines and adding years to your face.

Eye makeup, in particular, can make or break your look. Check through this list of common eye makeup errors that add years, and learn how to correct them.

1. Applying mascara on the lower lashes. This casts shadows, which exagerates your dark circles. It also has a tendency to highlight saggy eyes, fine lines, and discoloration near the eyes. Stick to mascara on the upper lashes only!

2. Incorrectly applying eyeliner. Don’t rim your lower lids, which makes eyes look smaller. Instead, trace the upper lid, thickening the line at the outer corners for a mini eye lift.

3. Using shimmery shadows. A touch of shimmer at the inner corners or on the brow bone can lift the eyes, making them appear wider and brighter. But using it all over or at the outer corners can actually highlight those fine lines.

4. Using anything super-bright. It should go without saying that anytime you use “look at me” shades on your face, well, people are going to look at you. More specifically, their attention will be drawn to the spot where you place the color. So if you don’t want to highlight droopy lids or wrinkles, stick to neutral shades around your eyes.

5. Incorrectly applying concealer. The skin under the eyes thins with age, so concealer can cake more easily. Use a small brush to apply only to the dark areas, not all over, and prep with eye cream to hydrate the area.

6. Forgetting to groom. Tweeze and comb your brows, and curl your lashes. These two simple grooming tricks are like a quick visual lift for your eyes.

You may have worked your tush off all spring in order to look smokin’ this summer, but months of picnics and barbecues can undo all that hard work if you’re not careful. Here are some common foods to avoid, easy swaps to make, and yummy sides to look for that won’t pile on the calories.

1. Turkey burgers are often assumed to be healthier than beef, but that’s only true if you opt for the lean variety; otherwise, you’re still chowing down on extra calories and fat, and you’d be better off with lean beef. Another smart choice: swap out the regular bun for a whole-grain English muffin.

2. Skip the fried chicken and grab a grilled kebab, which has the added benefit of including a dose of veggies.

3. If you really must have the potato or pasta salad, limit yourself to a small scoop, since the mayonnaise or dressing can pack a lot of fat and calories. Fill up the rest of your plate with healthy sides like corn on the cob and fresh fruit.

4. One guilt-free picnic choice? Guacamole! Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats, which are great for your heart, making guac a better pick than creamy dips.

5. Drinks are one of the sneakiest sources of calories, but while a can of soda or beer might seem like the most obvious culprit, lemonade and sports drinks are also trouble. Both are packed with calories and sugar, so sip sparingly. A better option: water with a wedge of lemon for flavor.

6. Dessert? Instead of the fruit-flavored Jell-o fluff, opt for the real thing. Berries with whipped cream or a slice of juicy watermelon are both great ways to end a meal, and both pack extra vitamins into your day without the added sugar, processed chemicals, and extra calories of most dessert options.

Coloring your hair at home can be scary there’s always the potential to wind up with a major color flub that leaves you wishing you’d just visited the salon. But if you keep these tips in mind, you can easily get your perfect hue at home.

When selecting your dye, you can choose from permanent or demi-permanent dye, which washes out over 28 shampoos. This is a good option if you aren’t sure if you’ll want to stick to your new color.

For best results, stick to a dye within two shades of your natural color; drastic changes, like red hues, are best left to the pros. If you’re torn between two shades, always choose the lighter. DIY dye kits tend to turn out darker than the picture on the package, and if your end color isn’t dark enough, you can always dye it a shade darker after a few days.

If the dye turns too dark, however, your only option for going lighter will be to use a hair color remover and then a lighter dye. Hair color remover is super-damaging to your hair, so it’s best to be safe and go a little too light, rather than to use this option!

Keep in mind that shades marked ‘warm’ enhance the red/gold tones in your hair, while shades marked ‘ash’ or ‘cool’ tone them down. ‘Natural’ shades are neutral. Choose accordingly based on your natural color to avoid going too red or too ashy.

Finally, before you color, snip off a small lock of hair where it won’t be noticeable and tape it to an index card. Apply the color, following the directions in the dye package, rinse, and dry with a blowdryer. This will give you a preview of your color results, and let you decide whether to leave the dye on for more or less time than what is recommended. It’ll also let you know if the dye will do something odd, like turn red!

See, that was easy. Now you’re ready to color with confidence!

While you’re there, check out some of these fun tech-related websites.

Chances are, if you’ve got a gadget, Skin It can, well, offer a skin for it. Laptops, phones, and more will benefit from one of the thousands of customizable skins available; and with so many options, your gadgets will probably be ready for an upgrade long before you’re done browsing. (www.skinit.com)

Part of the PopSugar network, GeekSugar maintains the sassy tone, photo-heavy design, and spiffy layout of its sister sites, with a wealth of news, reviews, and how-tos. If you’re interested in tech but find that most sites are too business-like, you might enjoy browsing this site. (www.geeksugar.com)

If you never got around to buying that photo editing software, head over to Picnik, a free photo-editing tool which helps you pretty-ify your snapshots with a few clicks. There are some cool design options along with the basic crop, remove redeye, and resize options. (www.picnik.com)

Looking for a new blog to read? Technorati tracks hundreds of blogs across multiple categories and even lets you know how popular your favorites are. (www.technorati.com)

If you’re ready for some free music, click over to Slacker, which streams a variety of free Internet radio stations across different genres (such as rock and country) and themes (such as party music). It’s a great option if you don’t have many radio stations in your town, or if you just want to check out some new artists in your favorite genre. Slacker Plus (which offers features like ad-free streaming, song lyrics, and unlimited song skips) is $3.99/month, a relative bargain.

Summer is finally here, and that means it’s time for vacation! Rather than let yourself get bogged down under a suitcase full of hair and skin care products, grab helpful multitasking minis that will let you pack your essentials without weighing you down.

For starters, reconsider packing the hair dryer, curling iron, and flat iron. Many hotel rooms have wall-mounted hair dryers, but if you must bring your own, look for a folding mini or travel model that will better nestle into your luggage. And a 2-in-1 styler like the Conair Mini U-Style ($20; drugstores) lets you straighten or curl without packing two seperate bulky tools.

Pare down your hair products by selecting only the few stylers you’ll really need, such as a basic hairspray. Remember the TSA rules regarding carry-on luggage and liquids, and pack accordingly! Mass retailers like Target offer a great selection of travel-sixed shampoos, soaps, and more, or you can buy the empty 3-ounce plastic bottles for around $1 apiece and refill them from your existing shampoo bottles at home.

A 2-in-1 facewash that cleanses and gently exfoliates will save you from packing a separate scrub. If you pack fragrance, look for a portable rollerball, which is uber-compact for travel. You’ll also want to pack a good moisturizer, since travel can wreak havoc on your skin, and a good lip balm; grab these with SPF so you’ll be covered day and night with one product.

For makeup, look for a multitasking foundation stick to take the place of separate concealer, foundation, and powder; or forgo the heavy foundation

If you dare to wear any of these 4 hot summer trends, be sure to keep these basic rules in mind to make sure the end result is trendy, not trashy.

1. Cut-outs (as seen on Selena Gomez). It might seem obvious, but if you’re wearing a dress with sexy cut-outs on the sides or at the collarbone, keep the rest of your look super-simple. No crazy hair, jewelry, or other accessories to compete with your dress.

2. Lace (as seen on Emma Watson). Think lace is just for trimming? Think again, and witness celebs in lace dresses, tops, and even shorts! Tone down the frilliness by pairing a lacy item with something structured (think a blouse with a blazer). And if you’re going to wear a sheer dress or top, layer it over something solid for a look that’s sexy, not skanky.

3. Cropped Tops (as seen on Rihanna). Certainly, the sultry singer has the abs to rock a mid-riff top. But if you’re not feeling quite ready to flash your abs quite yet, try layering a loose cropped top over a long, lean tank top. This year’s round of cropped tops are slightly oversized and very casual, not tight and tiny like the ones of years past, so they’re much more forgiving to those of us not blessed with a dancer’s body!

4. Geometric Prints (as seen on Katy Perry). Bottom line on prints: you love ‘em or you hate ‘em! As a general rule, keep accessories to a minimum with a boldly patterned piece. Or dip a toe into this trend with a smaller item, like a clutch or scarf, before purchasing a larger clothing item.

Angelina Jolie is celebrating her 36th birthday this week! Considering that her last name even means “pretty” in French, it’s a given that we could all learn a few things about style and beauty by taking notes on Jolie’s personal style evolution.

1. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color. Jolie loves classic black, but early on in her career, she sometimes went a bit overboard embracing the Goth Girl look. But in the past few years, she’s branched out quite a bit, walking the red carpet in stunning shades of red, navy, yellow, blush, and emerald.

2. Have a fallback! For those days when you just don’t have a thing to wear, have a fallback outfit that makes you look and feel good. For Jolie, that often involves simples shift dresses or pants and t-shirts in basic black, often topped off with a simple, slouchy shoulder bag and a pair of aviator sunglasses.

3. Don’t get too caught up in the trends. Jolie usually sticks to classic shapes and doesn’t go for anything too flashy or trendy.

4. Figure out the makeup that works best for you. Jolie tends to highlight her sexy cat-eyes with a bit of black eyeliner and mascara, and finishes it off with pinky-nude lips and loose, soft hair. It’s a trademark style that’s flattering and versatile, and with a few tweaks moves easily from day to night.

5. Don’t be afraid to change your hairdo. Changing her hair is one of the easiest ways for a woman to transform her entire image. Back before Angie became a major starlet, her long, too-black hair made her look more like Morticia than a movie star. A few years later, several inches shorter, and a few shades of brunette lighter, her hair looks shinier, healthier, and so much more flattering against her fair complexion. See? Change is good!
