Ever wonder what your date thinks of your hair and makeup? With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about your date night look. Here are some of the best and worst looks you can wear on a date:

Best: Touchable, bouncy waves. Guys like to be able to touch your hair, and they also love it when you’re confident to look natural (not flat-ironed to perfection).

Worst: Sticky products; anything that looks like it took hours to create. If you’re afraid to get a hair out of place, your date will be too and obviously, hair that’s loaded with products is no fun to touch.

Best: Light, glowy makeup. A little tinted moisturizer and highlighters makes your whole face glow, even if you’re not dining by candlelight.

Worst: Spacle-y foundation. Guys start to wonder what you’re hiding with that thick makeup.

Best: A low, loose bun. It’s sweet, and shows off your neck (which most guys love).

Worst: Sky-high topknots (or any other architectural ‘do). Again, guys are afraid to touch your hair. Severely pulled back hair can age you, and anything too bizarre approaches sci-fi territory.

Best: A little tinted lip balm or clear lip gloss. If you want to wear lipstick, choose a smooch-proof formula.

Worst: Anything that leaves stains on his face. He doesn’t want to be wearing your makeup by the end of the night.

Best: A cute hair accessory, like a headband or a sparkly barrette. It’s cute without being over-the-top.

Worst: Hair wreaths. Giant bows. Enormous flowers in your ponytail. For most guys, this crosses the line from beauty accessory to borderline scary fashion trend so skip it, and don’t make him try to guess what’s on your head.

Best: A hint of mascara. Bonus points if you curled your eyelashes for a natural, sexy flutter.

Worst: False lashes. They’re truly scary when you get up close, and if you pull a Britney Spears and lose one in your soup? Check, please.

The Pantone Color Institute has an annual tradition of choosing the “it” color for the New Year, and they must have been feeling especially peppy for 2012: the color of the year is tangerine orange! If wearing such a bold hue has you nervous, relax: it’s easy to wear this shade if you follow a few key tips.

For starters, you need to be wise about pairing orange with neutrals. Black is a huge no-no, since the two together scream “Halloween”. White, browns and tans, and nude beiges are all great partners, but make sure the undertone is the same. Warm nude beige or a crisp gray would look great with orange, but the wrong grayish-pinkish-nude could clash terribly with a hot tangerine.

Keep in mind that there is no one “right” shade of orange; you can go softer or bolder, with cooler or warmer undertones, depending on your skin tone. However, almost any orange you buy will look great with other citrus-hued items, like yellow flats or a ruby grapefruit-hued clutch.

If you’re really nervous about purchasing an orange item of clothing and who wouldn’t be, under those tricky dressing room lights here’s a neat trick for finding the right hue: pick up a few paint chips from a hardware counter and check them against your skin in natural light. When you’ve got the right shade, take the chip to the department store so you can compare it to clothing items for a tried-and-true match.

If a solid piece of apparel still scares you, bold orange jewelry or accessories are a nice alternative to allover orange, and can dress up even evening or work outfits. Orange pumps are red’s kickier, fresher cousin, more samba than sex appeal, and are a fun way to inject life into a dressier ensemble. They’re also a great way to doll up jeans and a white tee in a hurry!

Superstar Rihanna has ditched her siren red locks for a brunette ‘do! Tabloid pics from earlier in the month showed the songbird with a natural-looking brunette shade while she partied at the Kadmooment Day parade in her home country of Barbados. But with all eyes on her scanty carnival queen get-up complete with a skimpy jeweled bikini and red fethered headpiece the new color didn’t get much attention.

But on Friday, at the U.K. launch of Rihanna’s new fragrance, Reb’l Fleur, her gorgeous new shade was on full display.

Ever since she chopped off her long locks for the cover of her album Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna’s been a bit of a hair chameleon, experimenting with different cuts and colors. This summer, she made a dramatic switch-up with extensions and a neon red hue. (Her red hair can still be seen in the September issue of Glamour magazine, for which she’s the cover girl.)

Rihanna’s rich, warm brown is the perfect complement to her natural beauty. It still has a touch of auburn to it, which suits her fiery personality.

If, like Rihanna, you’re thinking about switching it up, keep in mind: the color you start with affects your result. Rihanna likely had pro help with her switch, but if you’re thinking of going the DIY route, remember:

- Stay within two shades of your natural do.

- If you’re a natural redhead, stick to natural or “ash” shades to tone down the orange effect. Be aware that you won’t completely cover the red, though–your results, like Rihanna’s, will be slightly auburn.

- If you’re blond, work in steps. Platinum blondes should use a light golden brown as a “filler” to add warmth; golden blondes can use a natural or ash-toned light brown first. Then move up to a darker brown.

The Reb’l Fleur by Rihanna collection includes eau de parfum spray and body lotion, and retails for $30 to $59.99 at Macy’s stores and Macys.com. View the enchanting “Reb’l or Fleur” video at www.rihannareblfleur.com.

If you want high-end fashion at a low-end price, then you’re in luck, because two major fashion collaborations are coming to a store near you this fall.

First up is the limited edition collaboration between Karl Lagerfield and Macy’s. The Chanel creative director brings his collection to select Macy’s stores and Macys.com on August 31. The entire collection, which spans several dozen pieces, is priced under $170.

So, what can you expect from the collection? Plenty of office-appropriate items, tailored separates, and day dresses. There aren’t any jaw-dropping surprises, but if you’re a fan of Lagerfield’s spendier works, then you might enjoy browsing through this collection for some updates to your fall wark wardrobe.

You can view a slideshow of the full collection at The Cut, located online at nymag.com.

Also hitting stores this fall, for a very limited time, is the Missoni for Target collection.

The collaboration between Margherita Missoni and the mass-retail giant will hit store shelves on September 13 and run for about five weeks. The first print ad for the collection was released last week, but so far, details on the collection are scarce.

What is known is that this is going to be far more than a mere clothing collaboration. Clothes, accessories, office goods, bedding, home decor basically everything under the sun that you could want in a lifestyle line, including patio furniture and bicycles will be available. In short, if you want to Missoni-ize all of your earthly possessions, you may.

Items in the collections will start at a very affordable $2.99 and range all the way up to nearly $600 for items like the patio set.

Many of Target’s previous collaborations with designers like Jean Paul Gaultier have sold out very quickly, so if you plan on snapping up some of these items, get into Target as early as possible once the collection goes up for sale!

Have you seen the ads for shoe clubs like Shoe Dazzle? Curious about what they offer? Here’s the skinnny on the shoes, the memberships, and what you can expect from these “shoe of the month” clubs.

There are three popular shoe clubs on the internet: Shoe Dazzle, Just Fab, and Sole Society. All three operate in a similar fashion: members sign up by taking a short quiz about their fashion personality, which goes to the team of stylists at the site. At the beginning of each month, the member receives a batch of selections of designer-inspired shoes, from which she can pick a pair (or more). Shipping is free.

If the member doesn’t see anything she likes, she can ask for a new round of selections. And if she still doesn’t see anything she likes, she has until the 5th of the month to decide to “skip” the month to avoid being charged the monthly membership fee, which is $39.95 for both Shoe Dazzle and Just Fab and $49.95 for Sole Society.

So, are these shoe clubs worthwhile? There are pros and cons. Like any other club offer, you have to be carefully read the terms of membership and make sure to opt out of your monthly pair to avoid a charge on your credit card. For the low price, the shoes probably won’t be leather, which is off-putting to some but can be great for vegan consumers.

Shoe Dazzle has gotten a lot of press because of its founder, starlet Kim Kardashian, and accordingly, many of the selections are flashy heels better suited to clubbing than everyday life. Just Fab also seems to place an emphasis on heels, though some are slightly more laid-back. Both of these sites would probably work better for a shoe lover who doesn’t need to worry about finding pairs that are office-appropriate.

Of the three, Sole Society seems to offer the widest selection of styles, with flats, wedges, and booties thrown in along with the higher heels. So if you’re looking for everyday pairs, this might be your best pick.

Check out these sites online: Shoedazzle.com, Justfab.com, and Solesociety.com. Have fun shopping!

Been feeling guilty about that “bad” habit you just can’t seem to shake? Well, if it’s one of the seven habits listed below, it might not be so bad after all! Read on and lose the guilt.

1. Drinking coffee. A cup or two a day can actually help to ward off some diseases, like diabetes and breast cancer, thanks to antioxidants found in the beans.

2. Napping. A short midday nap think twenty minutes helps you recharge your batteries, physically and mentally.

3. Eating dessert. Depriving yourself to the extreme leads to misery and often binging. Treat yourself now and then to a moderate portion of whatever it is you’re craving, and you’ll be much happier!

4. Taking vacation days/calling in sick. Some women pride themselves on having not missed a single day of work all year. But when you’re physically or mentally drained or worse, fighting the flu you can’t perform at your peak, your health and mood suffer, and you cripple yourself further in the long run. Sometimes a day off is exactly what the doctor ordered.

5. Wearing heels. Of course, your Louboutins shouldn’t be your go-to shoes for everyday activities extended wear can cause foot, knee, and back problems but switching up your heel height from day to day can actually be healthier for your feet, and wearing uber-high heels once in a while won’t kill you.

6. Getting dirty. Research shows that going overboard with the germaphobia can actually hurt your health, since it takes a certain amount of dirt exposure for the immune system to develop and deal with threats properly. Time to lose the Germ-X!

7. Swearing. Yes, there’s a time and place, but several studies have shown that letting out a few choice words can actually reduce stress and pain levels in test subjects. So next time you swing that hammer and miss, don’t feel so bad if you just can’t bite your lip.

Last week Gawker.com reprinted a wordy e-mail from the user of online dating site OKCupid, in which the author broke up with a woman he had met through the site and with whom he had shared a sum total of three dates.

Count ‘em again: three dates. Yet somehow he spun that into 700 words worth of impolite jabs, braggadacio, and unhelpful recommendations. Ouch!

So, now that this user has provided the rest of the world with this helpful example of how not to break up with someone you met online, how can you cut it off tactfully? Before you hit “send” on that e-mail, keep these tips in mind:

1. Keep it short and sweet. All you really have to say is, “I had fun, but I didn’t feel a connection.” Or, if that’s not quite true, “I don’t think we’re a good fit.” There’s no need for wordy explanations.

2. Be polite. Mr OKCupid probably thought he was doing his date a favor by pointing out her perceived flaws, and it does make for funny reading; but in real life, this is called “being rude”. Just keep your opinions to yourself.

3. Don’t overstate the relationship. Online dating tends to speed up the normal “blind date” routine; but don’t confuse all those exchanged e-mails and pictures for the months of face-to-face interaction that constitute a typical fledgling relationship. A date is just a date, and you can’t really know someone until you’ve spent time with them anyway. So if you meet up and realize the spark just isn’t there, don’t verbally wring your hands over the end of the “relationship”. A mutual love of coffee and classic literature does not a relationship make.

4. Don’t stress about it. Just like in the offline dating world, that initial spark of attraction sometimes fades after a few dates. As they say, there are plenty of fish in the sea, so don’t let a couple of bad experiences drive you away from online dating.

Here’s your quickie guide to some of the most common dress codes and what they mean.

1. White tie: the rarest and most formal of all, this is your chance to live out your Oscars night fantasy in a formal ball gown and your highest heels. There’s no way to be overdressed here!

2. Black tie: Also marked as “formal”, “creative black tie”, or some other such variation, this is the most common designation on fancy weddings. It’s slightly less dressed-up than a white tie wedding, but the men will still be in tuxes, so you still have an excuse to break out a fabulous dress and heels.

3. Semi-formal: Also sometimes marked as the confusing “dressy-casual”, this just translates in plain English to “nicer than what you’d wear the rest of the time”. You could get away with wearing a nice skirt and top as opposed to a formal dress, if you wanted.

4. Cocktail: You might also see this marked as “formal daytime”. It’s basically just “formal”, minus the traditionally “evening” touches like long gowns, dark colors, and sequins. Nice prints and less dressy fabrics are acceptable.

5. Beach formal: A formal wedding in an exotic locale will call for your dressiest attire that also jives with the elements; for example, on a beach, you might wear a formal sundress with flat dressy sandals and slightly casual hair and makeup.

6. Festive: This definitely translates to “party clothes”, but you’ll want to check with the wedding party for details, since it can vary based on the venue, season, and wedding theme! This is often noted for winter weddings with a sort of winter wonderland theme.

7. Casual: This doesn’t mean “anything goes”, so put away those short-shorts and tank tops. A casual dress or dressy separates and casual hair and makeup will be appropriate for almost any casual wedding.

Unless you live in a climate that’s summer-like all year ’round, the arrival of summer and warmer temperatures means a change in footwear. Here are four pairs to get you started, for every setting from the backyard to the office.

For running around town with girlfriends or attending a backyard barbecue, you’ll want something comfortable and sturdy, but cuter than basic flip-flops. Wedges and espadrilles are a dressier alternative to flip-flops (and offer a little height if you want it!), but are still easier to walk in than stilettos, so you don’t end your night limping. Charlotte Russe has a great pair of Nautical Knotted Rafia Wedges in a versatile neutral brown; $35.50, charlotterusse.com.

Summer being, of course, the unofficial wedding season, and a great time for outdoor weddings in nontraditional areas (say, on a beach), you’ll want to have at least one pair of flat, dressy sandals that will look good with a casual/dressy outfit and won’t sink into the sand. GoJane has a pair of Strappy Glitter Sandals (in gold or silver) for just $17.60 that would pair well with a variety of outfits.

At the office, open-toed sandals might not be an option, but if the nicer weather means you’re heading outside for a lunchtime stroll, and you don’t want to pack a pair of sneakers along with your pumps, consider a pair of bright, cute flats that would pair well with skirts or pants. A pair to try: the Sienna Ribbon Flat from Silvia Tcherassi for Payless; $44.99, payless.com.

And finally, when you’re at the beach and want nothing more than a cheap, colorful pair of flip-flops, head over to Old Navy, where their Women’s Classic Flip-Flops come in a whopping 18 colors. At $3.50 apiece, you could have a different color for every day of the week!
