Nose Jobs For Men – Vanity Or A Must?

Nose Job for MenIs cosmetic surgery only for the vain? Or do the increasing figures of people deciding to undergo enhancement procedures suggest that society is starting to view operations like nose jobs, boob jobs and liposuction as the norm?

As part of the Body Beautiful season on the BBC, BBC3 recorded the experiences of Tom Smith from London as he prepared to have rhinoplasty surgery. The show, ‘I want to change my body’, followed Tom from his initial consultation session at an mya.co.uk clinic, right through to the final post-op reveal.

Following the procedure Tom said: “I’m so happy with the outcome. It’s only 6months post op so it’s still settling and changing but I’m certain that this was the best money I’ve ever spent!”

So why are more men having nose jobs?

Nose jobs are becoming increasingly popular amongst men of all ages. Many opt for the procedure after having experienced some form of trauma to the face. For example: if damage is sustained to the nose area during sporting activities like boxing or rugby.

There are many others however, who choose to have this kind of surgery to improve their self-confidence or simply look better in pictures. For some, surgery of this kind can help them overcome the emotional anguish from years of teasing and even bullying sustained as a result of a particularly prominent or misshapen nose.

The majority of patients, like Tom, report that after the surgery they feel more confident and have better self-esteem.

What is the procedure?

A rhinoplasty surgery can be used to alter the size, shape and length of the nose. It can also include: reducing the size of nostrils, evening out bumps, shrinking the tip and straightening any bends.
The majority of procedures of this type take around 2 hours. These procedures are performed under a general anaesthetic and patients will usually require an overnight stay in hospital. The scars from a rhinoplasty procedure are usually all internal, and therefore not visible, although certain types of this surgery can result in some minimal scarring.

How long does it take to recover?

Patients who undergo nose reshaping surgery need somewhere between one to two weeks away from work to recover. Patients should also expect there to be some bruising for around a fortnight. Any obvious swelling usually subsides within the first month, and as the nose ‘settles down’ the overall appearance will continue to improve over a period of 12 months.
