The Time Traveler’s Wife..

time-travelers-wifeA cross between Ghost, Deja-Vu and The Lake House, this time travel romance is worth wandering into if you’re in the mood for a brain teaser. Based on the much-loved bestseller of the same name, The Time Traveler’s Wife revolves around a librarian (Bana) who suffers from a strange affliction that causes him to randomly slip back and forth in time.

His condition is really a curse. He falls in love and marries an artist (McAdams) with whom he has been friends since she was six years old. Trouble ahead: in the course of their married life, the wife has to cope with his frequent disappearances and run-ins with the law.

German-born director Schwentke, who previously helmed Flight Plan (2005), appears to be constrained by the implausibility of the tangled storyline. Admittedly, there are some moments of tenderness such as the chance encounter on the subway between the librarian and his long-deceased mother.

Slickly shot in wintry Toronto locations (the Canadian city substituted for Chicago), the melancholic momentum is intensified by a treacly background music score. Incidentally the troubled production was held up for more than a year.
When they first meet as grown-ups, the time traveler doesn’t recognise his future wife. When she tries to explain how she knows all about him, he exclaims, “it’s too much”.
