Want to get in early on one of fall 2011’s hottest beauty trends? It’s a modernized update on retro-’60s hair and makeup. But don’t worry it’s more rocker cool than Mad Men, so you won’t get any odd looks on the street.

Actress Kristen Stewart (whom you can see this winter in ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part One’) models the retro glam look to perfection as W magazine’s September cover girl. To copy her bold makeup, fill in brows with a dark pencil, and use black liquid eyeliner to create a bold cat eye. Pair with delicate pink blush and lip gloss for balance.

To tone down the sultry makeup for daytime, do just a dash of eyeliner at the corners, instead of a full smokey cat eye, and use a warm, sheer lip gloss (instead of lipstick), like soft pink or coral. It’s a way to sneak a bit of retro fun into your look while still appearing work-appropriate.

To get Stewart’s voluminous hair, begin in the shower: use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, then work a volumizing mousse through damp hair and blow dry with a large round brush for extra bounce. Set in large hot rollers for volume without curls; when cool, gently brush out and mist with light-hold hairspray.

For an even more wearable take on the Bardot-inspired hairdo, add volume just at the roots by teasing the crown, and gather hair into a low ponytail. If you want to, you can flat-iron the tail for sleekness.

Finally, if you want to add just a dash of retro (instead of going all-out), you can’t go wrong with a hot pink lip! Remember to use a nude lip liner so the color doesn’t bleed.

When you’re wearing retro-inspired hair and makeup, make sure to keep the rest of your outfit modern. After all, you want to pay homage to the era, not return to it!
