Hothouse florals can be found everywhere this spring, blooming on clothing and accessories alike. But for the pattern-shy, such a bold print can be intimidating. If you’d love to jump into this seasonal trend but aren’t sure where to start, just follow these tips to add a little or a lot of flower power to your wardrobe.
Start out slowly with a floral accessory. Bags and scarves are the easiest ways to dip a toe into this trend, and since they’re usually fairly affordable, you can try it out on the cheap.
Work your way up with a floral skirt. A body-skimming cut and swingy (not poofy) fabric will make this piece more flattering. If you’re not really a skirt gal, grab a bright floral top. Whichever piece you choose, pair it with neutrals to begin with, then pair with other colors as you get a little bolder.
Once you’re really comfortable with bold florals, edge into some wilder pieces, like floral pants. When you’re wearing such an eye-catching piece of clothing, you’ll want to tone down your look with neutrals, but don’t go too staid: you want to appear vibrant, not as though you raided your great-aunt’s closet. A wedge sandal and a silky tank in a neutral color pair well with floral pants and can be worn with the floral skirt as well; finish with simple, modern jewelry.
You can mix florals, but you’ve got to do it correctly. Make sure the two share a common color scheme. Wear the larger print over a smaller area of the body, and the smaller print over a larger area of the body. For example, if you’re mixing a floral skirt and bag, the skirt should feature a smaller print and the bag, a larger one.
Finally, if you simple can’t wait for spring to bust out your fabulous florals, don’t worry: you can wear them now! Make them winter-appropriate by pairing them with dark neutrals, like black stockings and booties. There’s no better way to beat the winter doldrums!
